As the garden settles into its quieter season, I’m reminded how much life is still unfolding beneath our feet. The last of the Japanese maples are letting go of their color, ornamental grasses are beginning to soften, and the perennials we’ve admired since spring are easing into their winter rest. This is the time of year when the garden asks us to slow down, look closely, and trust its quieter rhythms. For nearly two decades I’ve followed a simple winter ritual in my own garden and in many of the landscapes we care for. It’s a practice rooted in ecology, but also in the kind of intuition that comes from walking the same paths season after season. You may have heard the phrase “leave the leaves” circulating in recent years. While it can sound like a trend, the heart of the idea is something gardeners have understood for generations: that a garden is not just a collection of plants, but a living system, full of creatures and cycles we rarely see. In recent conversations among gardeners and ecologists, there’s been a renewed appreciation for what happens when we let fallen leaves stay where they naturally accumulate. They become shelter for overwintering insects, protection for roots, and the first step in creating the rich, crumbly soil we love. Much of the research being shared today simply confirms what many of us have witnessed firsthand that gardens are healthier and more resilient when we’re thoughtful about how much we tidy and how much we gently leave alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Designing an outdoor space is an exciting journey, filled with choices about how you want your home to look, feel, and grow over time. Whether you’re in Mountain View, CA, or the surrounding communities, or settling into life in the Portland Metro area of Oregon, partnering with a landscape designer can bring clarity and creativity to the process.

The questions below are here to help you understand what to expect from the first conversation to the final flourish of plants and materials. With thoughtful planning and a little inspiration, your outdoor space can become a more beautiful, functional extension of your home, one that feels natural, welcoming, and uniquely yours.

  • What is landscape design, and what does a landscape designer do?

Landscape design is the process of planning and creating an outdoor space so it looks beautiful, functions well, and supports the way you live. A landscape designer helps you turn your ideas into a clear plan by evaluating your property, developing layouts, and choosing plants and materials that fit your climate and style.

In Beaverton, OR, and the Portland Metro area, this often includes selecting plants that thrive in the Pacific Northwest and designing spaces for year‑round enjoyment. For homeowners in Northern California communities like Mountain View, the focus may center on drought‑tolerant choices and water‑efficient solutions. No matter the location, a landscape designer works with you to create an outdoor space that feels natural, inviting, and uniquely suited to your home.

  • Why is landscape design important for a home?

Landscape design is important because it helps create an outdoor space that is both beautiful and practical. A well‑designed landscape can improve curb appeal, increase usable outdoor living areas, and support healthier, more sustainable plant growth.

For homeowners in Beaverton, OR, and the Portland Metro area, thoughtful design ensures your yard works well with the local climate, from rainy winters to dry summers. In Northern California communities like Mountain View, landscape design helps maximize water efficiency and choose plants that thrive in warmer, drier conditions.

No matter where you live, good landscape design brings structure, purpose, and harmony to your outdoor space, making your home feel more welcoming and enjoyable year‑round.

  • How does landscape design help create a cohesive look between home and garden?

Landscape design helps create a cohesive look by making sure your outdoor spaces feel connected to the style and personality of your home. A landscape designer considers elements like shapes, materials, colors, and the flow of movement so that the garden complements the architecture rather than competing with it.

In Beaverton, OR, throughout the Portland Metro area, and in Northern California communities such as Mountain View, this might include aligning pathways with key sightlines, choosing materials that echo the home’s finishes, or arranging plantings to highlight architectural features.

  • What are common challenges in outdoor space planning, and how are they addressed?

Common challenges in outdoor space planning often include awkward layouts, limited space, privacy concerns, and making sure all the elements of a yard work well together. A landscape designer helps solve these issues by evaluating how the space is used, identifying problem areas, and creating a clear plan that improves flow, function, and visual appeal.

For homeowners in Beaverton, OR, the Portland Metro area, and Northern California communities like Mountain View, this might mean reshaping traffic patterns, adding screening for privacy, maximizing smaller areas, or selecting features that create a natural sense of balance.

  • How can landscape design adapt to different property sizes?

Landscape design can be tailored to fit any property size by focusing on smart layout, thoughtful plant selection, and features that match the scale of the space. On smaller properties, a designer may prioritize efficient use of space, create defined zones, or use vertical elements to add interest without crowding. Larger properties can incorporate more expansive layouts, layered plantings, and multiple activity areas while still feeling cohesive.

For homeowners in Beaverton, the Portland Metro area, and Northern California communities like Mountain View, the goal is the same: to shape the space in a way that feels balanced, functional, and aligned with how you want to live outdoors. Good landscape design ensures your yard feels intentional and inviting, whether it’s compact, spacious, or somewhere in between.

  • Why is communication important during a landscape design project?

Clear communication is essential during a landscape design project because it helps ensure the final results match your vision, needs, and expectations. Regular conversations allow the designer to understand your goals, share ideas, provide updates, and adjust the plan as needed.

For homeowners in Beaverton, the Portland Metro area, and Northern California communities like Mountain View, CA, strong communication helps keep the project organized and collaborative, no matter the property style or scope. When you and your designer stay aligned throughout the process, the finished outdoor space feels more intentional, functional, and truly personalized.

  • How does a well-organized design process reduce delays and surprises?

A well‑organized landscape design process helps reduce delays and surprises by creating a clear plan from the start. When the goals, layout, materials, and timeline are mapped out early, everyone knows what to expect, and decisions can be made confidently and on schedule.

For homeowners in Beaverton, OR, the Portland Metro area, and Northern California communities like Mountain View, CA., a structured process also helps prevent miscommunication, avoid unnecessary changes, and keep the project moving smoothly from concept to completion. With a solid plan in place, the entire experience feels more efficient, predictable, and stress‑free.

  • How does regional climate influence landscape design decisions?

Regional climate plays an important role in landscape design because it helps determine what plants, materials, and layout choices will thrive long-term. A landscape designer considers sun exposure, seasonal changes, and overall environmental conditions to create a space that looks great and functions well throughout the year.

For homeowners in Beaverton, OR, the Portland Metro area, and Northern California communities like Mountain View, CA, understanding the climate ensures the right mix of plants, textures, and features are chosen for lasting beauty and easy maintenance. No matter the region, thoughtful climate‑aware design leads to an outdoor space that feels natural, durable, and well-suited to the home.

Here's what our satisfied customers are saying...

Jenna is simply amazing. She has designed gardens at two different residences of mine. She has the knowledge and imagination to bring your dreams to life, literally. The depth of her team is tremendous. She has helped us with city and county permitting, the design of the garden, the sol prep, hardscape, lighting, plant procurement, installation of irrigation and plants. I give Jenna Bayer and her company my highest recommendation.

I have hired Jenna Bayer for several projects over the years. Her designs are stunning, unique, and receive numerous compliments from neighbors and friends. Designs are for seasonal beauty with environmental sensitivity. Her firm handles the whole project from design through installation. Projects are on time and on budget. Very responsive. Highly recommended.

The JBGD team installed my garden in 2019, and it still looks beautiful today! This spring, my garden was magazine-worthy with big, beautiful blooms all layered and nestled together. The garden remains colorful with plants blooming all year round. Everything they plant grows and thrives. They are true horticulturists who love what they do and take great pride in their work.
